Breaking the Silence: Understanding Sexual Abuse in the Latinx Community

Sexual abuse (SA) and childhood sexual abuse (CSA) are deeply painful and pervasive issues across all communities—but in the Latinx community, these experiences are often hidden behind layers of silence, shame, and cultural pressure.

Why We Don’t Talk About It

For many Latinx families, the phrase “de eso no se habla”—“we don’t talk about that”—is an unspoken rule. Survivors are often told to stay silent, protect the family’s image, or forgive the abuser to “keep the peace.” This silence is not only harmful—it’s dangerous. It keeps survivors in pain and allows abusers to continue without accountability.

Cultural Factors That Keep Survivors Silent

  • Familismo: While family unity can be a strength, it can also be weaponized to silence survivors.

  • Machismo and Marianismo: Gender roles can contribute to the normalization of male dominance and female silence or sacrifice.

  • Religious Guilt: Survivors may be told to forgive and move on, shamed into silence through misused spiritual teachings.

  • Immigration Fears: Undocumented survivors may fear reporting abuse or seeking help due to potential legal consequences.

The Impact of Silence

Survivors of CSA and SA often carry deep wounds into adulthood:

  • PTSD, anxiety, or depression

  • Difficulty with trust, intimacy, or boundaries

  • Chronic self-blame or shame

  • Disconnection from their bodies or identities

Healing is Possible

As a Latinx therapist—and a survivor—I want you to know: You are not alone. What happened was not your fault. There is no timeline for healing.

Therapy can be a powerful space to process trauma, reconnect with your body, and reclaim your voice. Culturally aware therapy recognizes the nuances of our identities—our language, our spirituality, our ancestors—and helps us feel seen while we heal.
